THE OFFICIAL MECHANISM PODCAST

Originally released in 1997 - THE PRODIGY's 3rd album THE FAT OF THE LAND was to be the album that made The Prodigy a worldwide electronic phenomenon. With the first single FIRESTARTER blasting it's way to the top of the charts we knew that the boys had become harder and tougher than ever before. Then came BREATHE which not only crossed genres but opened them up to a whole new audience and made them international chart topping superstars almost over night, even smashing the elusive American music market. Then came the most controversial single and video of their career SMACK MY BITCH UP. The video was banned by most music tv shows and could only been seen after midnight on most channels. The song became an anthem immediately and still to do this day is their most popular live track. THE FAT OF THE LAND was at the time The Prodigy's most mature sounding record, fusing hip hop beats and samples from the likes of The Beastie Boys and The Ultra Magnetic MC's and even featuring Crispian Mills from KULA SHAKER as guest vocalist on the epic NARAYAN. The album ends with Keith Flint's punk style vocals on their cover of Fuel My Fire originally written and performed by Melbourne (Australia) band The Cosmic Psychos and re-written by grunge group L7. THE FAT OF THE LAND was the album that took The Prodigy from underground rave pioneers to cyber-punk superstars and finally earned them the recognition they so deserved.

In 1997 British electronic duo THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS released their second album DIG YOUR OWN HOLE. This was the album that broke them worldwide and helped define the term "chemical beats" in the late 90's to describe the multi layered, funk styled form of breakbeat based electronic dance music of the time. With 2 chart topping singles, Setting Sun (featuring Noel Gallagher on vocals) and the breakbeat anthem Block Rockin' Beats, the album quickly hit the top of both the pop and dance charts. 1992 saw the release of TLC's debut album OOOOOOOHH ON THE TLC TIP which spawned 3 Number 1 singles, Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg, Baby Baby Baby and What About Your Friends. This feisty, loud and colourful trio broke through the pop/hip hop scene with their upbeat hits, smooth harmonies, witty raps and of course their brightly coloured baggy clothing . TLC was all about female empowerment years before Destiny's Child and the Spice Girls were even thought of. With their safe sex message proudly celebrated via condoms of varies sizes pinned to their clothing, TLC wanted to be fun and fierce all at once. The album showcased not only the ladies abilities to create smooth melodies with sharp and witty lyrics, but also proved that rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes was a force to be reckoned with, eventually becoming one of the most sought after female rappers of her time. So 20 years on and this album still stands as a fun filled frenzy of funked up beats and catchy sing along hits....and that is oooooohh on the TLC tip!

THE KLF were a duo from the UK who created their very own unique sound of electronic music varying from ultra ambient to stadium rave. Creating a fantasy world called Mu Mu and characters called The Justified Ancients Of Mu Mu, their most successful album THE WHITE ROOM was a nonstop frenzy of dancefloor fillers and blissed out ambient bleeps segued together with layers of cheering crowd samples. Some considered this to be the first "electronic dance music concept album". The vinyl, cassette and cd versions of the album all differed slightly with different versions of some tracks. Released in 1991 the album broke new ground for many electronic artists to experiment with samples, effects and edits. However it wasn't long after this success that THE KLF ended their time in the music business and deleted their entire back catalogue (in the UK atleast). So to celebrate this masterpiece of 90's electronic-pop-rave-ambience is this very special 20th Anniversary mechamix highlighting just some of the very best tracks from the album including their 3 Top 5 hits What Time Is Love, 3 A.M. Eternal and Last Train To Trancentral.

The legend of MILLI VANILLI in pop culture and as one of the biggest scandals to ever hit the music industry still remains as huge now as it did over 20 years ago. Ironically the whole lip syncing fiasco has since become a standard of "live" performances with some of the biggest pop stars today still miming to pre-recorded vocals on stage. However way back in 1989 and 1990 Milli Vanilli were THE BIGGEST pop duo in the world! Their first 4 singles hit No.1 in the USA with a multi million selling debut album to follow. They were on the cover of every teen music magazine, they had sold more cassingles (ask your parents what they were) than any other artist at the time, they also won a slew of American Music Awards and even a Grammy for Best New Duo/Group. However once it was revealed that Rob & Fab didn't actually sing on any of their records or during any of their concerts they became the world's biggest punchline. Despite the scandal, Milli Vanilli's music was actually quite adventurous at the time, especially their remixes and club versions, as they were one of the first hugely successful pop acts to heavily use samples from movies, television and other popular hits of the time (including Bobby Brown, Sly & Robbie and Grace Jones). DISCOVERY was the second album from French electro/house duo DAFT PUNK which was originally released in 2001 and spawned the worldwide Top 5 hit ONE MORE TIME and features the track HARDER,BETTER,FASTER,STRONGER which Kayne West sampled heavily for his hit "Stronger". The album is recognised as a concept album of sorts and was actually made into a anime film called Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem in which all the videos for the tracks on the album are segments of the film. Very few electronic artists can make an enjoyable and credible album worth listening too all the way through but Daft Punk certainly proved they could create something more than just an album of 4 minute disposable dance hits.
